William Lindsey McGrew, 82, of North Vernon died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2008, at his home.

Mr. McGrew operated McGrew’s Auction and Appraisal Service for 50 years, formerly owned McGrew’s Auto Sales in Columbus and had been a security guard at Bakalar Air Force Base. He was known for being the Master of Ceremonies at country and gospel music shows in the area. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he received the Purple Heart for wounds received in Okinawa.

He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Madison Chapter #55; Indiana Auctioneers Association; Wilson Chapel Church in Elizabethtown; and a former member of North Vernon Lions Club. He attended Vernon High School. A car collector, he also enjoyed Bluegrass music, antiques and flea markets.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 23, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Rev. Doug Sharp, pastor of Wilson Chapel Church, officiating. Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery with military honors conducted by North Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars, Matt Hester Post 2021.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Disabled American Veterans.

Born May 18, 1926, in Grayson Co., Kentucky, Mr. McGrew was the son of Miles Louis and Zella Lou Spencer McGrew.

Surviving are a son, Michael (Jill) McGrew of Seymour; two sisters, Mary Lou (Curt) Stiening of North Vernon and Margaret Lancaster of Beech Grove; two grandchildren, Steven (Priscilla) McGrew of Napoleon and Jonathon McGrew of Seymour; and two great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Steven McGrew of Napoleon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edwin Louis, Donald D. and H. Russell McGrew; and two sisters, Lucy Virginia Klendworth and Rebecca Jane Taylor.
