Ruth Alice Ortman, 85, of North Vernon died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Ortman was a graduate of Collinwood High School in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a homemaker and had worked with Meals on Wheels in North Vernon for several years and as a school cook in Cleveland. A former member of Zion Lake Christian Center, she attended The Wesleyan Church in North Vernon. She enjoyed history and reading.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16, at West Richfield Cemetery in Cleveland with the Rev. Gary Krieg officiating.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday June 19 at The Wesleyan Church in North Vernon with the Rev. Don Langebartels officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 5:30 p.m. until time of the service.

Arrangements were made by Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon.

Born July 22, 1922, in Cleveland, Mrs. Ortman was the daughter of Harry and Martha Swigart Foster. She married Clark Ortman on July 7, 1961, in Cleveland.

Surviving are four sons, Clark (Cheryl) Ortman of Cleveland, Richard Ortman of Chicago, Illinois, Don (Connie) Sparks of Granada Hills, California, and Jack Sparks of Denver, Colorado; five daughters, Jeanine (Denny) Wilhelm of North Vernon, Kathleen O. Miller (Bruce) Thompson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jane Ortman Ford of Tacoma, Washington, Nancy Ortman (Joe) Snodgrass of Cleveland and Martie (Gary) Krieg of Franklin; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in January 1978; a stepdaughter, Gretchen Ortman Williams; and a brother, Don Foster.
