Roland Samuel “Red” Wilson, 84, of North Vernon died at 6:35 a.m. Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour.

Mr. Wilson and his wife had owned and operated the former Village Shop, a gift, wallpaper and paint store; and the former Arch Restaurant, both in Vernon. They had also managed condominiums in Florida. He was an organizer of Bittersweet and Cider Days and Village Christmas in Vernon and had been elected Jennings County Surveyor on the Democratic ticket. An Army veteran of World War II, he served from March 12, 1943, to March 29, 1945, and received American Theater and EAME Ribbons and Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medals. He enjoyed working with his hands, working with his sons at Country Meadows subdivision, antiques, painting and wallpapering.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Rev. Richard L. Burcham officiating. Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery with military graveside honors by North Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars, Matt Hester Post 2021.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hospice of Jennings County.

Born September 30, 1923, in Marion, Mr. Wilson was the son of Rutherford B. and Gladys Spencer Wilson. He married Bonnie Botkin Wilson on December 3, 1948, in Marion.

Surviving are two sons, Jay Alan (Kristi) Wilson and Kevin Lee (Lisa) Wilson, both of North Vernon; two daughters, Cheryl Elaine (James Edwin) Booher of Titusville, Florida, and Kay Lynn (John) Fox of Seymour; a brother, Denny (Joan) Wilson of North Vernon; a sister, Melanie (Don) Lemon of Columbus; eleven grandchildren, Mary Booher, Ein Booher, Autumn Booher and Jennifer (Mike) Foreman, all of Titusville, Amy (Eric) Casteel of Michigan, Ashley (Eddie) Fujawa of Indianapolis, Alison Wilson and Breana Wilson, both of North Vernon, Kristina (Matthew) Wilson of St. Louis, Missouri, and Benjaman Fox and Christopher Fox, both of Seymour; and three great-grandchildren, Madison, Kathryn and Allyson Casteel of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, on January 28, 1989; a brother, Glen Wilson; and a sister, Dorothea Goodwin.
