John Edward Nugent, 67, of North Vernon, Ind., died at 4:17 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2008, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus, Ind.

Mr. Nugent served in the U.S. Army from May 31, 1961 to May 28, 1964. On June 16, 1964, he began a 38 year career with the B & O Railroad, now CSX Railroad, retiring as a brakeman and conductor in 2002. A 1959 graduate of North Vernon High School, he designed and delivered floral arrangements for Vernon Losey at the Floral Gift Shop while in high school.

Mr. Nugent was a member of United Transportation Union Local 1517 for 40 years, Hilltoppers Car Club in Cincinnati, Vernon Baptist Church and a member and past president of Westside Cruisers. He enjoyed restoring old cars, attending car shows, boating, fishing and camping.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 14, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Revs. Bart Smith and Don Morris officiating. Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of South Central Indiana, Vernon Baptist Church or the donor’s choice.

Born December 12, 1940, in Indianapolis, Mr. Nugent was the son of Kenneth and Mary Bishop Nugent. He married the former Mary Lou Malcomb on December 22, 1962, at Tea Creek Baptist Church in Jennings County, Ind.

Surviving with his wife are his mother-in-law, LaVerne Vance Malcomb of North Vernon; brothers-in-law, Don (Judy) Malcomb of Vernon, Ind., and James (Nettie) Malcomb of North Vernon; a sister-in-law, Lois (Bob) Tylicki of New Albany; and cousins, Linda (David) Leach and Mark Davis of North Vernon, and Janet (Tom) Steward of Cincinnati.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
