| | | Charles Frederick Olds, 82, of North Vernon died at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Olds was employed at Arvin Industries in North Vernon for 41 years, retiring in 1988 from the maintenance department. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he received Victory, American Area Campaign and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign medals. He was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church in Jennings County and the American Legion Post 0777 in Indianapolis. He enjoyed playing musical instruments, fishing, pitching horseshoes and dancing, and was a fan of Indiana Pacers and Indiana University basketball.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 23, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Revs. Connie Barr and Della Hamilton officiating. Calling is from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and after 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be at Scipio Cemetery with military graveside honors by North Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars Matt Hester Post 2021.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hospice of Jackson County.
Born August 16, 1926, in Jennings County, Mr. Olds was the son of Roscoe and Hazel Kelly Olds. He married Betty Jean White on August 26, 1946, in Vernon. Following her death, he married Kathryn Richart on June 30, 2007, at their home.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Charles Stanley (Kathy) Olds of North Vernon and Anthony Wayne (Glenda) Olds of Deputy; two stepsons, Donald (Angie) Richart of Jackson, Kentucky, and Kelly (Shelia) Richart of Westport; a stepdaughter, Sherry (Dave Long) Richart of Seymour; two brothers, Franklin “Sandy” (Margaret) Olds and Merrill (Janice) Olds of North Vernon; eight grandchildren, Troy Olds, Ty Olds, Keith Olds and Joey Olds of North Vernon, Tim Olds of Portage, Nathan Olds of Ft. Wayne and Randy Hatton and Jamie Hatton of Commiskey; four stepgrandchildren, Jeremy Richart of North Vernon, Chloe Richard of Jackson, and Natalie Richart and Nicole Richart of Westport; and twelve great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jean White Olds, on August 17, 2000; six brothers, Virgil L., Harold F., Henry F. and Robert L. Olds, Roscoe Olds, Jr., and Walter N. Olds, Sr., and three sisters, Betty J. Hartwell, Alma M. Hartwell and Mary L. Olds.
