| | | Rosemary Guthrie, 87, of North Vernon died at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008, at Jennings Healthcare Center, where she had been receiving therapy.
Mrs. Guthrie and her husband owned and operated Guthrie Grocery in North Vernon for many years, and she had also worked at the former T G & Y Store. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in North Vernon and an honorary member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority. She was a graduate of North Vernon High School and a Technical Sergeant in the Quarter Masters Corps during World War II. An avid bowler and golfer, she also enjoyed dancing, cooking, bird watching, flowers and animals. She was the great-great-granddaughter of Col. Hagerman Tripp, the founder of North Vernon, and was raised by her grandparents, Fred and Nettie Verbarg.
The funeral will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 27, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Rev. Richard L. Burcham officiating. Calling is from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday and after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by North Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars, Matt Hester Post 2021.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Mercy Rescue.
Born October 3, 1920, in North Vernon, Mrs. Guthrie was the daughter of Ernest and Beulah R. Donaldson Verbarg. She married Rowan E. Guthrie on January 7, 1953, at the Christian Church in Columbus.
Surviving with her husband are a son, Greg (Sandy) Guthrie of North Vernon; a daughter, Susan Barbette Guthrie of North Vernon; a sister, Jane Maley of Sun City, California; four grandchildren, Carrie (Jason) Bennett, Allison (Mitch) Sporleder and Heather (Josh) Lepage of North Vernon and Chris (Ann Marie) Guthrie of Virginia; and twelve great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Guthrie; and a grandson, Michael Sharp.
