Norman Eugene Douglas, Sr., 65, of North Vernon died at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, August 30, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Douglas worked as a handyman, and had also been employed at North Vernon Forge from 1970 to 1977. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1962.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Rev. Tim Douglas officiating. Calling is from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Burial will be at Presbyterian Union Cemetery in Westport.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hospice of Jennings County.

Born October 28, 1942, in Westport, Mr. Douglas was the son of Sam and Elizabeth Stroup Douglas.

Surviving are a son, Norman Eugene (Belinda) Douglas, Jr., of Jonesville; four daughters, Cindy Ashpaugh, Sharon (Rodney) Hubbard, Karon (Sam) Whicker, and Tracy Clark, all of North Vernon; five brothers, Marvin (Anna) Douglas of Columbus, Lloyd Douglas of North Vernon, Tom (Rhonda) Douglas of Greenfield, George (Debbie) Douglas of Seymour and Sam (Jill) Smith of Liberty, Kentucky; three sisters, Lillian (Wayne) Cruser of Shelbyville, Geri Francher of Louisville, Kentucky, and Virginia Shrader of New Castle; twelve grandchildren, Erica Douglas and Kisha Mason of Phoenix, Arizona, Zach Pike and Lindsey Pike of Jonesville, and Kayla (Aaron) Carr, Matthew Ashpaugh, Aaron Blevins, Adam Blevins, Cody Hubbard, Jarod Whicker, Damon Clark and Jessica Clark, all of North Vernon; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter Harmon of Columbus and Dakota Carr of North Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Turner, Paul and Herbert Douglas, and Carl Smith; and an aunt and uncle who raised him, John and Clara Burkhead.
