| | | Frances Fawcett Johnson, 93, of Vernon died at 10:35 p.m. August 31, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Muncie.
Mrs. Johnson was director of Jennings County Public Library from 1964 until retiring April 1, 1978. She had been office manager of Bolser-Shaw Monuments in Vernon for 15 years, was a teacher at Hayden High School from 1939 to 1941 and taught piano at her home for many years.
She was a member of the Scholarship Committee for Indiana State Library, American Association of University Women, Red Hat Society, Vernon Clionian Club, North Vernon Business and Professional Women’s Club and Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She was also a 75 year member of Hayden Order of the Eastern Star, Vernon Presbyterian Church and the Mildred Brown Missionary Society of the church. She had been a member of the Vernon Cemetery board for more than 40 years and was a former secretary of the board. In 1966, she was named Person of the Year by the North Vernon Plain Dealer, the first woman to be honored. She had been elected as Clerk-Treasurer of Vernon for two terms in the 1950s and two terms in the 1980s.
Mrs. Johnson was a 1932 graduate of Hayden High School and a 1938 graduate of Indiana Central College in Indianapolis.
She began playing piano for churches at the age of 12, a service that would continue for most of her life. She was a fan of Cincinnati Reds baseball; college basketball, especially Indiana University; and enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, September 5, at Vernon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Eric Erickson officiating. Calling is from 11 a.m. until time of the service. A memorial service will be conducted at 12:45 p.m. by Hayden Order of the Eastern Star. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon.

Born May 20, 1915, in Hayden, Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of Joseph and Stella Dodd St. John. She married Delos Fawcett in 1940 in Hayden. He preceded her in death in 1979. She married Fred Johnson on August 21, 1983, in Vernon. He preceded her in death July 28, 2004.
Surviving are a son, DeLane (Sharon) Fawcett of Vacaville, California; a daughter, Debbie Dailey of Peru; a stepson, Fred E. (Carolyn) Johnson of Columbus; two stepdaughters, Mary Frances Johnson and Marsha Sloan, both of Muncie; three grandchildren, Mike (Jami) Dailey of Pendleton, Ben Dailey of Muncie and Stacy (Charles) Young of Eureka, California; two stepgrandchildren, Jeffrey (Mary) Johnson of Ekron, Kentucky, and James (Janet) Johnson of Georgetown, Ohio; four great-grandchildren, Isaac and Stasia Young of Eureka and Megan and Sara Dailey of Pendleton; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Jeffrey Johnson, Jr., of Ekron and Rose Amy (David) Black of Virginia; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death her husbands; and two brothers, Lincoln and Lamoyne St. John.
