| | | Emmett Gordon Shepherd, 90, of North Vernon died at 12:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at Jennings Healthcare Center in North Vernon.
Following retirement from Jefferson Proving Ground in 1974, Mr. Shepherd was a bailiff for Jennings County Court until 1975, was a loan officer at First National Bank in North Vernon from 1975 to 1977 and then worked as a traffic counter for the Indiana State Highway Department until 1979.
He was a 1936 graduate of North Vernon High School and served in the U.S. Army from October 12, 1943, to November 5, 1945. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a member and past commander of the American Legion, both in North Vernon, and a member and past master of North Vernon F & A.M. #59. He enjoyed playing bridge, hunting, fishing and all sports, especially golf.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 20, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Rev. Bob Weeks officiating. Calling is from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and after 1:00 p.m. Saturday. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by North Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars Matt Hester Post 2021.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to First Baptist Church of North Vernon or Hospice of Jennings County.
Born May 21, 1918, in North Vernon, Mr. Shepherd was the son of Emerson J. and Ada Pearl Ricketts Shepherd. He married Lucille V. Belding on January 15, 1955, in Franklin.
Surviving are a son, Dale (Judy) Shepherd of North Vernon; a daughter, Beverly (Steve) Sullivan of Indianapolis; two stepsons, James M. (Norma) Belding and Paul A. (Geneva) Belding of North Vernon; two stepdaughters, Barbara (Chester) Moore of Indianapolis and Sheila Heath of North Vernon; 19 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, on February 13, 2000; a stepdaughter, Donna Jeanne Thompson; three grandsons, Jerry Shepherd, Mike Moore and Gary Belding; and four brothers, Frank, Carl V., Robert Dale and Wayne Shepherd.
