Martha Pauline Pieratt, 86, of North Vernon passed away at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2008, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Mrs. Pieratt retired in 1990 as a Food Manager from Jennings Community Hospital. Previously, she worked at Muscatatuck State Hospital in Dietary and was the Owner and Operator of the Butlerville Drug Store and Martha’s Soda & Snack Shop, from 1957 to 1972. During WWII, her primary responsibility was to make military clothes.

She was a graduate of Newport Kentucky High School and a 1971 graduate of Southeast Indiana Vocational School. Mrs. Pieratt continued her education and she received an Associate Degree from the University of Louisville in 1977. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and of the Jennings Community Hospital Guild. Mrs. Pieratt was a 50 year member of the North Vernon Order of Eastern Star #183 and a former Worthy Matron. She was also a member of the Dietary Managers Association and the Mennonite Missionary Society of the Butlerville Mennonite Church.

Mrs. Pieratt enjoyed volunteering her time, cooking, writing poetry, and keeping up on current affairs and news.

The funeral will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at Bethel Baptist Church in North Vernon, with the Reverends Joe Mayes, Richard Schenck, and Jon Beck officiating. Visitation is from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2008, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon and after 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. An Eastern Star memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Burial will be at the Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Bethel Baptist Loyal Daughters ministry, the Bethel Baptist Because We Care ministry, or church of the donor’s choice.

Born December 6, 1921, in Owsley County, Kentucky, Martha was the daughter of Frank Clark and Ruth Carter Clark. She married Ford Tipton Pieratt on February 24, 1940. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Marty (Cathy) Pieratt of Butlerville; two daughters, Sonja Leah Rose of Carmel and Glorianna Joy (Gary) Robbins of Butlerville; two brothers, Danny (Karen) Gadd and Frank (Betty) Clark of North Vernon; three sisters, Olive (Curtis) Caplinger of Southport, Ola (Bill) Curry of North Vernon and Grace (Ronald) LeVan of Fishers; nine grandchildren, Monica (Robert) Anderson of Noblesville, Jason (Kim) Rose of Carmel, Krissy Robbins of Greenwood, Katy Robbins and Cody Robbins of Butlerville; Chelsey (Branden) Thompson of Milan, Carter Pieratt, Marlayna Pieratt, and Callie Pieratt of Butlerville; and five great grandchildren, William Anderson, Maria Anderson, and Andrew Anderson all of Noblesville, and Lilian Rose and Brock Rose of Carmel.

She was preceded in death by her step-father, Nick Gadd; her mother, Molly Ruth Gadd, her husband, Ford Tipton Pieratt; one sister, Thelma Schenck; two brothers, Oliver Gadd and David Gadd; two grandsons, Joshua Robbins and Jeremiah Robbins.
