| | | Joseph Houston Smith, 84, of North Vernon, Indiana passed away at 10:15 p.m., Saturday, November 1, 2008, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mr. Smith retired from the B&O Railroad in1978, after 50 years as a Conductor. He was named Railroader of the Year in 1990 at the Railroad Day’s Celebration in North Vernon. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corp before the WWII. Mr. Smith attended school in Russell Springs, Kentucky.
He enjoyed woodworking, flowers, landscaping, playing card, fishing and collecting toy trains. Mr. Smith was a member of the North Vernon Masonic Lodge #59.
The Funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Rev. Marcus Speer officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, and after 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday until the time of the service. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society or Jennings Home Health Care.

Born November 27, 1923, in Russell Springs, Kentucky, Mr. Smith was the son of Asa Melvin and Luda Smith. He married La Verne Anderson on February 22, 1948, in Columbus, Indiana. She survives.
Surviving along with his wife, are two sons, Jerry Smith of Hayden, Indiana and Keith (Michelle) Smith of North Vernon, Indiana; three daughters, Terry (Mike) Schwacke, Gail (Jerry) Sharp and Charlene (Amos) Sharp all of North Vernon, Indiana; one brother, Hershel (Virginia) Smith of Edmondton, Kentucky; and one sister, Juanita Mahoney of Taylorsville, Indiana; 14 grandchildren, Roy Sharp of Scipio, Indiana, Rusty (Debbie) Sharp, Tony (Gega) Sharp, Tonya (Kevin) Rogers, Jeremy Sharp, Joey (Jenny) Baldwin, Shannon (Matt) Bauguess, Brooke (John) Gatrell, Kelsey (Kyle) Sutton, Kirby Smith, Kensley Smith and Alicia Carpenter all of North Vernon, Indiana, Jason (Shauwna) Baldwin of Columbus, Indiana, Joshua Baldwin of Clarksville, Indiana; 17 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dennis Smith; two sisters, and one brother.
