Helen Ruth Pettit, 78, of Butlerville, Indiana, passed away at 3:10 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2008, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus, Indiana.

Mrs. Pettit retired in 1992 from Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville, Indiana. She previously worked for Kelley’s Greenhouse, Farm Bureau Co-op, and Regal Rugs. She was a 1948 graduate of Vernon High School.

Mrs. Pettit was a 60 year member of Graham Baptist Church. She spent many years teaching Sunday School and playing the piano or organ during services. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, reading the Bible, playing piano, gardening, oil painting, and attending church activities.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2008, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon, Indiana, with the Reverends Tom Mattingly, Bob Harting, and Troy Green officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2008, and after 12:00 noon on Monday, until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Graham Baptist Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Hospice of Jennings County or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Born September 30, 1930, in Jennings County, Helen was the daughter of Clyde Griffin and Vella Sullivan Griffin. She married Ralph E. Pettit on November 12, 1948, at Graham Baptist Church in Jennings County, Indiana.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Ralph E. Pettit; two sons, Harry “Ed” Pettit of Vernon and William “Bill” Pettit of Butlerville; two daughters, Karen Alexander of North Vernon and Helen Stainbrook of Butlerville; one brother, Herbert “Jack” Griffin; eleven grandchildren, Amy (Thomas) Abrell of North Vernon, Ed Pettit II of Columbus, Joseph Pettit of Vernon, James Alexander of Bartow, FL, Ryan Martin of Columbus, Shay (Scott) Speer of Reddington, Andrea Campfield of Lexington, KY, Jerianne (Lynn III) Bateman of North Vernon, Nakia (Nikki) McKenzie of North Vernon, Eric Pettit of Butlerville, and Chris Pettit of Vernon. Also surviving are ten great-grandchildren; Caleb Abrell, Elizabeth Alexander, Laurana Speer, Liam Speer, Paige Bateman, Lynn Bateman IV, Gavin Bateman, Aiden Kirchner, Tanner Stearns, and Rider Pettit.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Norma Lauderbaugh and Doris Vinson.
