Mary E. Tolbert, 83, formerly of North Vernon, Indiana, passed away at 12:05 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mrs. Tolbert was a 1943 graduate of North Vernon High School. She was a homemaker that enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Vernon, Indiana.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2008, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon, Indiana, with the Rev. Marvin Sweet officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2008, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon, Indiana. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the American Kidney Association.

Born January 3, 1925, in Lexington, Indiana, Mary was the daughter of Clayton Hampton and Lizzie Sanders Hampton. She was later adopted by Jay and Elizabeth Baker (Stoy), who raised her. She married James E. Tolbert on May 2, 1944, at the Methodist Church in North Vernon, Indiana. He survives.

Other survivors include one son, James J. (Claire) Tolbert of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; two daughters, Susan (Pat) Eder of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Anne (David) Woodbury of Palo Alto, California; one brother, William O. (Virginia) Schreckengast of Indianapolis, Indiana; two sisters, Lizzie Morrison of Hanover, Indiana, and Georgia Stewart of Sellersburg, Indiana; seven grandchildren, James C. (Cyndie) Tolbert of Littleton, Colorado; Heather (Bill) Bays of Cincinnati, Ohio; Rachel (Carey) Tapp of Cincinnati, Ohio; Carrie (Romi) Petrelis of Chicago, Illinois; Atticus Woodbury, Sam Woodbury, and Gabriel Woodbury, all of Palo Alto, California; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Lizzie Sanders Hampton; and, her adoptive parents, Jay and Elizabeth Baker (Stoy).
