Mary Louise Smith, 94, formerly of North Vernon, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at 11:30 p.m. at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville, Indiana.

Mrs. Smith was previously a teacher at Vernon Elementary School and taught 6th grade at North Vernon Elementary. She retired from the Jennings County School System in 1982. Mrs. Smith was a 1931 graduate of North Vernon High School. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Indiana University.

Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church in North Vernon; the North Vernon Chapter #183, Order of the Eastern Star; the Jennings County Retired Teachers Association; the Indiana Retired Teachers Association; and was a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s organization. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, working crossword and word search puzzles.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2009, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon, Indiana, with Bob Ochs officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, and on Thursday, one hour prior to the service at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be through Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Born March 16, 1914, in Bedford, Indiana, Mary was the daughter of Fred and Icely Green Dixon. She married Leslie Smith on January 8, 1936, in Bedford, Indiana. He preceded her in death on June 6, 2000.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann (Shokri) Radpour of Noblesville, Frances (Jim) Harr of North Vernon, and Lois (Jerry) Beguhn of New Castle; one brother, Edward (Wanda) Dixon of North Vernon; two sisters, Kathleen McGarvey of Middletown, PA and Geneva (Marion) Gilkey of Lucas, KY; seven grandchildren, Shokrina (Peter) Beering and Jackie (Kevin) Rowles of Carmel, Diane (Tim) Hon of Cicero, Leslie Bohall of North Vernon, Chris (Angie) Harr of Bloomington, Carrie Hunter of Muncie, and Andy Beguhn of New Castle; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four brothers, Joe Dixon, Clark Dixon, Ralph Dixon, and Bob Dixon.
