Joseph “Joey” Biever, age 65 years of 773 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington died Thursday evening, May 29, 2003 at Columbia St. Mary’s, Ozaukee Campus in Mequon where he had been a patient for the past several days. He was born in Sheboygan on September 6, 1937, son of the late Vincent and Agnes Keller Biever. He attended Port Washington High School and was a 1959 graduate of Marquette University. On December 2, 1982 he married Joan Krueger at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington. Joe operated Biever Maytag in Port Washington. His grandfather started the business in the building currently occupied by Biever Maytag in 1893 as a general store. Appliances were added at the turn of the century. In 1941 Joe’s father Vincent and his uncle Emil started the Ben Franklin Store and in 1946 the two businesses separated with Joe’s dad doing the groceries and appliances and his uncle Emil the Ben Franklin store. In the mid 1950’s the grocery business was sold and just the appliances and later carpeting was sold. The store occupied various locations in downtown Port Washington and in 1991 moved back into the original Biever Store on the north end of the Port Washington where it is currently operating out of. Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington and an avid Green Bay Packer fan, having attended over 353 games. His family has held Packer season tickets since 1935. In 1953 he was awarded Eagle Scout. He was one of the original Fish Day committee members, chairing the parade committee for many years. He was formerly a member of the Port Washington Park & Recreation Board, a former J.C., and fomer Rotarian. Joe enjoyed performing as a clown, belonged to the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce and helped form the Dave Roller Fan Club. Joe is survived by his wife Joan, children John (Nicole) Leiviska and James (Julie) Leiviska of Port Washington, Carol (Craig) Czarnecki of Port Washington and Robert “Bubba” Biever of Belgium, grandchildren Jamie, Megan, Joel, Rebeca, Alexandrea and Anne Leiviska, Kathy and Sarah Czarnecki and Matthew and Jack Biever, 1 sister Mary (Thomas) Greisch of Port Washington, nieces and nephews, He was preceded in death by 2 brothers Dr. Paul Biever and Vincent Biever. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday afternoon, June 3, 4:30 pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington with Father Allan Sommer officiating. Friends may call at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington on Monday from 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers memorials to St. Mary’s Organ Fund or charity of choice appreciated.
