Mary Lou Hays Akers, age 79 of Gallipolis, Ohio, went peacefully to be with our Lord on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Four Winds Community of Wellston, Ohio, with daughters and a friend present. She was born September 25, 1928, in Friendly, West Virginia., to the late Mary and Ralph Hays.
Mary Lou was a graduate of Sistersville High School, Sistersville, West Virginia. She went on to graduate from West Virginia University with a Masters degree in Dietetics. She did her internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis Missouri.
She was a Registered Dietitian and a member of the American Dietetic Association. She was employed by Holzer Medical Center and later retired from Gallipolis Developmental Center. She was a charter member of Good News Baptist Church, Gallipolis, Ohio, where she served as pianist for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Helen Lanier of Georgetown, Ky., daughter, Alice Lehew of Jackson, Ohio, son, Dean Akers, of Georgetown, Ky.; brother, Joseph C. (Diane) Hays III of Parkersburg, West Va.; seven grandchildren, Jakim (Carey) Lanier of Eugene, Or; Micah Lanier of Columbus, Oh.; Aaron Lanier of Gallipolis, Ohio; Sarah Lehew of Huntington, W. Va.; David Lehew of Jackson, Ohio.; Jonathan and Megan Akers of Georgetown, Ky.; three great grandchildren, Haidyn, Macabee, and Beck Lanier of Eugene, Or.; several nieces and nephews; two very close, Joseph C. (Terrie) Hays IV and Susan Wright.
She was preceded in death by both parents, an infant brother; infant daughter, Sarah Ann Akers.
A graveside service 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008 at the Friendly Cemetery in Friendly, West Virginia with Doctor Kurt Busick officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations will be accepted for a special fund for Dean Akers c/o Alice Lehew, 6711 Franklin Valley Road, Jackson, Ohio 45640 or Helen Lanier, 3844 Cynthiana Road, Georgetown, Kentucky 40324.
