Marlin D. Mapes, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, age 88 of Jackson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 19, 2011 with his family by his side. He was born April 20, 1923 to the late Orville and Garnet Mapes. In addition to his parents, Marlin was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Belle (Kern) Mapes; infant brother, Wendell Mapes; and sisters: Phyllis Shephard and Geraldine Hickman.
Marlin is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Marlene and Tom Sexton; son and daughter-in-law: Jerry and Norene Mapes; grandchildren: Shawn (Melissa) Sexton, Will Sexton and Tonya (Chris) Thaxton; great grandchildren: Lacey, Ali and Morgan Sexton; step grandson, Matt Kinnamon; step great grandson, Austin Kinnamon; brother and sister-in-law: Jack and Norma Mapes; sister, Glenna Pasden; many nieces, nephews, other family members and dear friends.
Marlin was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served his country during WWII as a pipeline engineer in Africa, India and Burma. Upon returning from the service, he was called in to the Priesthood of The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, known now as The Community of Christ Church. He served in the priesthood for over 60 years. Marlin was employed at French Dry Cleaners, Mead Corporation and retired from GTE. He was a member of The Community of Christ Church and the Wellston Senior Citizen Center, where he enjoyed daily fellowship with dear friends who he considered family.
Marlin enjoyed life to the fullest each and every day. He served the Lord, loved spending time with his family and enjoyed having fun with his friends at the senior center. He was a wonderful father and the most incredible grandfather that anyone could ever ask for. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Eisnaugle-Lewis Funeral Home, 28 Harding Avenue, Jackson, where the family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm. Burial with military honors to follow at Fairmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Marlin’s memory to the Wellston Senior Citizen Club, 407 South New York Avenue, Wellston, Ohio 45692 or to The Community of Christ Church, Corners of Orange and Starr Streets, Jackson, Ohio 45640.
