MARQUETTE – Shirley Mae Parker, 76, formerly of 316 Pine Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, October 7, 2009, at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Born April 24, 1933 in Marquette, a daughter of George H. and Olive M. (LaBlue) Parker, Shirley was a lifelong Marquette resident. To countless schoolchildren and passersby, Shirley was the friendly crossing guard at the former Fisher Street School. She began her career with the Marquette Public Schools in 1969 as a crossing guard and teacher’s aide, and when the City of Marquette took over the crossing guard operations, she continued for many more years until her retirement in 1992. Always ready with a wave and cheery “hello”, Shirley was a fixture at the corner of Fisher and Third Streets. In her leisure, she enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and writing to her many pen pals. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Stevie Leigh McKenna; grandson, Ian S. McKenna; and great-granddaughter, Brook Piehl all of Sheboygan, WI; three brothers, Duane (Clarabelle) Parker of Marquette, Thomas (Vicky) Parker of Tucson, AZ, and Rodney (Kim) Parker of Kaukauna, WI; two sisters, Georgia (Edward “Ted”) Fezzey of Tucson, AZ and Florence “Pokie” (Thomas) Olivier of Marquette; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter, Sylvia Parker of Sheboygan, WI on September 25, 2007; and an infant brother, Patrick Parker in 1943.
Graveside inurnment services will be held at the Park Cemetery on Thursday, November 5, at 11:30 am.
