MARQUETTE – Carl H. Carlson, 71, of 2663 Montgomery Street, Marquette, passed away Friday evening, October 9, 2009, at his home.
He was born in Marquette on August 2, 1938 to Carl H. and Anna (Hokenson) Carlson. As a young man, Carl sailed on the ore boats. He later went to work as a concrete mason being in business for himself for a number of years. Eventually, he worked for various construction companies, retiring from Closner Construction Company in 2000. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed bowling, cribbage, and a good game of darts with his friends at the Moose. He loved to travel. Carl was a hard worker but also knew how to enjoy the pleasures life has to offer.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Kitty” Carlson; two sons, Carl H. (Tracey) Carlson III of Ishpeming and Mark Carlson of Negaunee; a daughter, Kathie Ann (Craig) Stagliano of Negaunee; two sisters, Eleanor Asplund and Mary Ann (Tom) Huebner both of Marquette; eight grandchildren; three great granddaughters; sister-in-law, Marilyn Scharstrom of St. Paul, MN; brother-in-law, Sonny Longtine of Marquette; four step children, Betty Smith (Rick Meyers), Scott (Deb) Epper, David (Stephanie) Epper, and Donnie (Stephanie) Epper all of Marquette; ten step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; his former wife and mother of his children, Kathleen Carlson of Marquette; and his good friend, Richard Lintula of Marquette. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; a step great grandson, Kyle; mother-in-law, Della Longtine; and sister-in-law, Lois Francis.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 14 beginning at 1:00 pm. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm Wednesday afternoon in the funeral home with Rev. David VanKley officiating. Inurnment will be made in the Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lake Superior Hospice Association, 914 W. Baraga Avenue, Marquette, MI 49855.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the caregivers at Lake Superior Hospice for the excellent care and many kindnesses extended to Carl and his family.
