MARQUETTE – Alice L. Buckmaster, 86, of Marquette, was promoted to Glory on Tuesday evening, October 13, 2009, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.
Born January 30, 1923 in Stephenson, a daughter of Lloyd and Edna (Halvorsen) Buckmaster, Alice had been a Marquette resident since 1929. She was a graduate of the Graveraet High School. For five years she was employed with Montgomery Ward in customer service and then eleven years as manager with the Lighthouse Christian Book Store. For over 70 years, Alice was a faithful, tireless soldier in the Salvation Army. She played in the band, taught Sunday School, sold the War Cry Magazine, and spent four years on mission for the Salvation Army in South Africa. Alice loved her Lord and often brought her nieces and nephews to services at the chapel.
She enjoyed craftwork of all kinds and was a talented artist, working in oil painting.
Survivors include her sisters, Kathleen “Kitty” Kelly of Mesa, AZ and Sandy (Karl) Stenglein of AuTrain; a brother, Lloyd (Sue) Buckmaster of Harvey; sisters-in-law, Patricia “Pattie” Buckmaster of Skandia and Mary K. Buckmaster of Marquette; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her step-mother, Norma Buckmaster; sisters, Holly Beaudry and Lola Tauch; brothers, Richard, Lawrence, Louis “Stan”, and John Buckmaster; and brothers-in-law, Edward “Bud” Beaudry and Jack Tauch.
Friends may call at the Marquette Salvation Army Chapel on Friday, October 16, beginning at 2:00 pm. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 pm Friday afternoon with Captain Donna Rose officiating. A eulogy will be given by Captain Christine LaTourneau, Retired. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the work of the Salvation Army, 1009 W. Baraga Avenue, Marquette, MI 49855.
