MARQUETTE - Rita Mary Leppanen, 53, of 444 W. Hewitt Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Friday morning, October 30, 2009, in the Hospice Suite located at Marquette General Hospital, in the loving and comforting care of her family. Rita was born October 18, 1956 in Midland, Michigan, to Peter and Betty (Dennis) Porte. She was raised in Coleman and graduated from the Coleman High School in 1975 and Northern Michigan University in 1979, where she obtained a Finance Degree. On March 30, 1979, she married Daniel S. Leppanen and together the couple established a home and raised their family in Marquette. Rita was employed for over 20 years as an account clerk at Northern Michigan University’s Bookstore. In her leisure, Rita enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. Survivors include her husband, Dan Leppanen; son, Aaron and daughter, Ashley; her mother, Betty Porte; sisters, Ann MacCord, Madeline Bahling, Dolores Porte (Lon Wackerle), Donna (Kelly) Babcock, and Emily (Tim) Gross; her brother, Peter (Debra) Porte; mother-in-law, Eileen Leppanen; brother-in-law, Rick Leppanen (Cherrie Adams); 20 nieces and nephews, 5 grand nieces and nephews, and many friends. Rita was preceded in death by her father, Pete Porte and father-in-law, Albert Leppanen. The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Monday, November 2, beginning at 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm Monday afternoon in the church with Rev. Jeff Johnson as celebrant. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cancer Care of Marquette, 764 Mather Avenue, Ishpeming, MI 49849. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family. | ||
