Kathryn Virginia Newland was born May 15, 1914, to Harry and Jessie (White) Gibson. She attended country school and graduated from Woodbine Normal School in 1932. After receiving her teaching certificate she went on to teach in the country school for seven years. Kathryn married Arthur Newland on September 23, 1939, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Woodbine. The couple farmed near Portsmouth and Woodbine. She went back to teaching in 1953 and taught until 1960. In 1961 she started working for Harrison County Rural Electric Company and retired from there in 1980.

Kathryn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She dedicated many years to the Harrison County Genealogy Society. She was an avid reader, loved poetry and belonged to the Woodbine Reading Circle. She lived independently for 95 years and completed the daily crossword puzzles in the paper. She looked forward to the visits with her grand-children, family and friends, and appreciated the daily visits with Elda and Barb Shinn.

Kathryn died Monday, May 25, 2009, at her home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 95 years and 10 days.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art Newland in 1997; son James Newland in 2005; and her six siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Sally (Robert) Pryor of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter-in-law, Deloris Newland of Woodbine, Iowa; three grandchildren, Ronald Pryor of Papillion, Nebraska, Lori Pryor of Phoenix, Arizona, Susan (Stephen) Olson of Crescent, Iowa; three great grandchildren, Samantha, Zachary, and Montgomerie; and many other relatives and friends.
