  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Myrna Marie (Smith) Shaffer was born west of Woodbine, Iowa on the old “Gard” farm on April 26, 1927, to William and Laura (Tupper) Smith. She grew up in and around the Woodbine area and attended several country schools until she graduated from Woodbine Normal High School in 1944. Upon graduation Myrna joined her sister, Darlene, in Washington D.C. and worked in the insurance department at the VA building. She was actively involved in the USO program during WWII. Myrna married Lawrence Shaffer on October 31, 1946, at the First Christian Church in Woodbine. Besides being a homemaker and farm wife, she was also employed for several years by the REC. Lawrence and Myrna farmed in the Woodbine and Magnolia area until retiring to Woodbine in 1984.

Myrna was baptized on April 5, 1942 and became a faithful member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Woodbine. She participated in CWF activities and also volunteered at the Rose Vista sing-a-longs. Myrna loved her family. She loved her trips to Hawaii and enjoyed being a winter Texan and taking family trips to other states as well. Myrna enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

Myrna died Monday, August 3, 2009, at Rose Vista Nursing Home at the age of 82 years, three months, and eight days.

Myrna was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dale & Kenneth Smith; granddaughter, Gwyn Marie DeLance; and three brothers-in-law, Clyde Snyder, Jr., James P. Davis, and Fred E. Hood.
