  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Gertrude Elizabeth (McGee) Daugherty was born August 16, 1917, to Elmer and Mabel (Caldwell) McGee in Essex, Iowa. The family lived in Shenandoah until Gertrude was six years old. They then moved to Woodbine where Gertrude graduated from Woodbine High School in 1935. Gertrude married Lawrence Daugherty on February 1, 1936, in Papillion, Nebraska. The couple lived in Woodbine and Gertrude worked for Moore Brothers Grocery Store as a clerk for 10 years. Lawrence and Gertrude enjoyed wintering in Mission and Pharr, Texas for 19 years and made many lifelong friends there.

Gertrude was a member of the Woodbine United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, crocheting, playing cards, reading, watching basketball and spending time with family and friends. Holidays always meant family dinners at "grandma's house" where she proudly used her silver serving pieces that her husband had won over his many years as a car salesman. No one went away hungry!

Gertrude died October 16, 2009 at Rose Vista Nursing Home at the age of 92 years and two months.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, in 1992, two daughters, Phyllis Hutcheson in 1983 and Judy Makinen in 2009; two brothers, Glen and Clarence McGee and three sisters, Hazel Condron, Elva Selleck, and Luella Drummond. She is survived by five grandchildren; Lori (Kevin) Gochenour of Logan, Steve (Mary) Hutcheson of Kansas City, Missouri, Staci Makinen of Blair, Nebraska, Troy Makinen of Mountain Iron, Minnesota and Todd (Carla) Makinen of Orr, Minnesota; four step grand-children; six great grandchildren; two sons-in-law, Bill (Diana) Hutcheson of Woodbine, Iowa and Lawrence “Mac” Makinen of Blair, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.
