Gary Dean Jones was born October 18, 1944, to Charles and Marian (Peabody) Jones in Woodbine, Iowa. He was raised in Woodbine and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1963. Gary worked at Omaha Steel until he was drafted into the Army in 1966. He had basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and was stationed in Worms, Germany. After his honorable discharge in 1967, he returned to Omaha Steel. Gary married Paulette Soetmelk on June 29, 1968, at Zion Lutheran Church in Magnolia. He then went to work at Union Pacific. He was transferred to North Little Rock, Arkansas in 1989. After working for UP for 36 years he retired in October of 2004, and the couple returned to live in Logan in 2006.

Gary was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He loved sports, reading, walking and working on the computer. Gary and his brother-in-law, Gary Soetmelk, would go to different high school football games every Friday night.

Gary died Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 65 years and 16 days.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale Jones and father-in-law, Bill Soetmelk. He is survived by his wife, Paulette Jones of Logan, Iowa; daughter, Tammy Jones of Omaha, Nebraska; four brothers, Lee Jones of Marian, Iowa, David (Karen) Jones of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Ronnie (Ann) Jones of Louisburg, Kansas, Max (Lori) Jones of Dunlap, Iowa; sister-in-law, Alice Jones of Council Bluffs, Iowa; mother-in-law, Agnes Soetmelk of Logan, Iowa; in-laws, Anne (Richard) Liddick of Bellevue, Nebraska, Gary (Kathy) Soetmelk of Avoca, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
