Chester F. Gaede, 86 of Rt. 214 Phoenicia died Saturday February 1, 2008 at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville. He was a quality control inspector for Rotron, and also Stamp,Inc. of Rhinebeck. He was an area resident most of his life. He was a United States Marine Corp veteran having served in the South Pacific during World War II and having earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a 55 year member of the Phoenicia American Legion Post #950 having filled all the chairs of the organization. He was a member of the Woodstock American legion post prior to his Phoenicia membership. He was a licensed flight pilot and enjoyed extensive travel. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing and golf. Chet spent his childhood and youth in Woodland Valley. He said that fishing there was not âthe Bestâ but darn close to it! He married his first wife Jean Lasher in 1948. In later years, he was a founder of the Shandaken Theatrical Society and has been active for the past 15 years. He met his current wife Dorothy in 1987 through their involvement in STS. They later lived together in Phoenicia and were married in 2003 in Auruba. They enjoyed traveling and made many friends, but it was always good to come home. He loved people of all ages - and they loved him.
He was born September 8, 1921 in Marlboro son of the late Chester A. And Ethel Carthy Gaede.
Surviving are his loving wife Dorothy Casey Gaede, two sons Chet and his wife Sherry of Colorado, and John of Woodstock. A twin brother Henry and his wife Helen of Mt. Tremper, and nieces Nancy and Julie, and nephew Henry. Two stepdaughters: Patricia Stroh and Irene Rubbo, grandchildren Jessica and husband Ed, Derek, Michelle, and Matthew and great grandchildren Nicole, Fayth, and Dakota.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Chet Gaede will be held at a later time to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shandaken Theatrical Society .
