SOUTH MILLS, NC—Joseph Milton Barnes, Jr., 67, of the 100 block of Horseshoe Road, went to be with the Lord on October 4, 2009. A native of Norfolk County, he was the son of the late Joseph M. Barnes, Sr. and Doris Stephens Barnes and retired as a conductor with more than 34 years of service with the Norfolk Portsmouth Beltline. He was a member of Roper Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are his loving wife, Katherine D. Barnes; two children, Rhonda Shelton and Joseph M. “Jody” Barnes, III; three grandchildren, Allison Shifflett, Ashley Shelton, and Summer Barnes; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Sara; and a sister, Anna R. Sullivan.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. in South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church with Rev. Steve Jones and Rev. Bobby Williams officiating. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Roper Pentecostal Holiness Church or a charity of one’s choice.
