Dolores (Peters) Reed, formerly of Matamoras, PA peacefully passed away in Lake Forest, IL, surrounded by her loving family on September 2nd, 2011.

Dolores grew up in Brownsville, PA. In 1943, Dolores graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA and enlisted in the Army nurse corps. She was stationed at Langley Field, Va. At the end of WWII, she moved to Matamoras and worked as a staff nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. In 1969, she was appointed as the first day nursing supervisor at Mercy Community Hospital, formerly St. Francis. Once her four children were grown, Dolores returned to school. In 1979, she graduated magna cum laude from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY, with a BS degree in Behavioral Science.

Later in her nursing career, Dolores, a true humanitarian, worked as a trained hospice volunteer for Orange County, as a staff nurse at Milford Valley Convalescent home, and then as a substitute school nurse for Delaware Valley School District.

Throughout her years of semi-retirement, Dolores traveled much of the world, the most memorable being all of Europe, Asia, Egypt and the Holy Land. She was a creative, loving grandmother and helped to raise her seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Dolores was an empathic friend who listened, shared her wisdom and offered her support. She was well known among her friends for her lively dinner parties and spirited conversations.

Dolores is predeceased by her son Dr. David Reed. She is survived by her daughters Donna Castle, Peace Dale, RI, Cindy Veltri, West Milford, NJ, Dr. Deborah Reed Nelson, Lake Forest, IL, and her sons-in-law, John Veltri and Dr. Erik Nelson, her grandchildren and great grandchild.

Friends may call at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, 307 Ave F., Matamoras, PA on Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 10:30am to 11:00am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Matamoras, PA with Rev. August A. Ricciardi officiating. Graveside services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
