James N. Baxter, Sr.
James N. Baxter, Sr., a lifelong Beacon resident, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 86.
Born in Beacon on March 31, 1922, he was the son of Emmett and Cecelia Hawkins Baxter. On May 18, 1946, he married the former Alice C. Estabrook at St. Patrick’s Church, New burgh. Mrs. Baxter survives.
Mr. Baxter was a pressman for the former National Biscuit Company in Beacon, retiring in 1984 after 42 years of service. He proudly served in the US Marine Corps, serving during World War II. He was a past Grand Knight and Fourth Degree member of Trinity Council #445, Knights of Columbus, Beacon, and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Joachim-St. John the Evangelist Church, where he was a parishioner. He was a former member of Southern Dutchess Country Club, Beacon.
In addition to his wife, Alice, he is survived by his son, James N. Baxter, Jr. and his wife, Donna Milano, Pleasant Valley; his daughter, Patricia Moran and her husband, William, Poughkeepsie; two grandchildren, William and Shawn Moran; two great grandchildren, Zachary and Emma Moran; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Henry Baxter.
The family will receive their friends on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Members of Trinity Council will meet at 8 p.m. for services.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon.
Interment will follow in St. Joachim’s Cemetery, 303 Washington Avenue,
Beacon.
