John J. Cocuzza


John J. Cocuzza, a 44-year resident of Hopewell Junction, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Cornell). He was 72.

John was born in Berlin, New York on June 7, 1936 to John J. and Alice Brown Cocuzza. He married the former Frances R. Vassalo. Mrs. Cocuzza survives at home in Hopewell Junction.

Following graduation from high school in 1954, John enlisted in the US Marine Corps. While in the Marines, he served two years in Japan in the capacity of an encryptor, a highly sensitive and confidential position at that time.

He was a graduate of St. John’s University, New York, receiving a degree in accounting while working full time. He joined IBM Corp. in 1964 where he held many administrative and management positions, the last two of which were Corporate Payroll Accounting Manager and Poughkeepsie Site Business Controls Manager. He is a past secretary of Dutchess Boat Club, Beacon, past treasurer of the Whortlekill Rod and Gun Club, Hopewell Junction, and City Brook Hunting Club, Hancock, NY.

In addition to his wife, Frances, John is survived by six children, Caren Cocuzza, Virginia Beach, VA, Robert J. Cocuzza and his wife, Debbi, Hopewell Junction, Patricia Strack and her husband, Darren, Lagrangeville, Michael Cocuzza and his wife, Heidi, Hockessin, DE, Paige Constable, Brooklyn, and R. Todd Constable, Manhattan. In addition he so loved his grandchildren, Robert J. Cocuzza, Jr., Jordan Strack, Jocelyn Strack, Garret Cocuzza, and Dylan Rose Constable.

The family will receive their friends on Friday, July 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, July 12, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon.

Interment will follow in St. Joachim’s Cemetery, 303 Washington Avenue, Beacon.

Donations in John’s memory may be made to Hospice of Dutchess County, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-1034 and Animal Rescue Foundation, PO Box 1129, Beacon, NY 12508-8129.
