Bro. Matthew DeFamio, O.F.M. Cap.
Brother Matthew DeFamio, O.F.M. Cap., a Beacon resident, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Wingate at Beacon. He was 83.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 9, 1925 to Francis and Rosa Flora DeFamio. At baptism, he was given the name, Anthony. He was invested with Capuchim habit on July 27, 1947 at St. Lawrence Friary, Beacon. On August 8, 1948, he professed Temporary Vows. He professed Solemn Vows on August 12, 1951 at St. Lawrence Friary in Beacon. For most of Bro. Matthew’s religious life, he was assigned to various parishes and monasteries as a maintenance engineer and as a cook.
Prior to his joining the Province of the Sacred Stigmata, Bro. Matthew served int eh US Army as a Rifleman (PFC) with the 2nd Infantry Regiment, 5th Division from February 14, 1944 to December 24, 1945. During this time, he served overseas. He was honorably discharged and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for his heroic service to our country.
Brother Matthew was retired and a resident of the Infirmary at St. Lawrence Friary, Beacon.
Visitation for Br. Matthew will be Friday, July 11, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Lawrence Friary, 180 Sargent Avenue, Beacon. There will be a Wake Service at 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Friary.
Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
