Richard J. Sassi, a lifelong Beacon resident, died Thursday, November 18, 2008, at St. Lukeís Hospital, Newburgh. He was 54.
Born in Beacon on May 10, 1954, he was the son of Michael R. and Jennifer Carbonaro Sassi. He married the former Terry Musacchio at St. Johnís Church on May 10, 1975. Mrs. Sassi survives at home.
He graduated from Beacon High School in 1972 and received his associate, bachelor, and masterís degrees in criminal justice from Dutchess Community College, Mercy College, and C.W. Post University, respectively. He was also a graduate of the 169th session of the FBI National Academy.
He retired as Chief of Police for the City of Beacon after thirty-three years of service, where he worked his way up through the ranks and served in various special capacities including being one of the original K-9 officers for the City of Beacon. He was currently enjoying selling cars at Healey Hyundai, Beacon.
Mr. Sassi was a past president of the Dutchess County Police Chiefs Association and the current president of the New York State Retired Chiefs Benevolent Association. He was a fifth degree black belt in the World Tae Kwan Do association and was an instructor with Beacon Recreation. Previously, he was a member of the Elks Club, Lions Club, Southern Dutchess Exchange Club, and Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
In his free time, he was an avid Harley rider, skier, golfer, pianist, and Corvette enthusiast.
He was a parishioner of St. Joachim-St. John the Evangelist Church, Beacon.
In addition to his wife and his mother, he is survived by his son, Richard J. Sassi II and his wife, Lisa, Beacon; his brother, Michael R. Sassi and his wife, Illiane, Massapequa, NY, his grandson, Richard J. Sassi III, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carmen and Phyllis Musacchio, and his dog, Ace.
The family will receive their friends on Friday, November 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon. Handicap access is via Oak Street.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon.
Entombment will follow in Fishkill Rural Community Mausoleum, 801 Route 9, Fishkill, NY.
