Donald J. Smith, a lifelong Beacon resident, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 81.

Born in Beacon on September 4, 1927, he was the son of Alfred T. and Helen Conlon Smith. He married the former Helen M. Thorpe, who preceded him in death on August 4, 2004. He retired from the former Matteawan State Hospital, where he was a Correction Officer. Mr. Smith was US Navy veteran, serving in World War II. He was a parishioner of St. Joachim-St. John the Evangelist Church, Beacon. He was a member of VFW Post 666, Beacon, and a former member of Tompkins Hose Fire Company. He loved his pet dogs, Duke, Scruffy, and Niki.

Mr. Smith is survived by his sister, Gloria Dolson, Beacon; a stepdaughter, Alberta Schember and her husband, William, Poughkeepsie; four grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Vincent, Russell, Alfred, and Kenneth Smith, and his sister, Ruth Hennessey.

The family will receive their friends on Friday, July 10, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon. Handicap access is via Oak Street.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, June 11, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon.

Interment with military honors will follow at St. Joachim’s Cemetery, 303 Washington Avenue, Beacon.
