David P. Betterton
David P. Betterton, Sr., a lifelong resident of Beacon and three year resident of Hudson, FL, died Saturday, October 24, 2009, at Hospice in Hudson, Fla. He was 57.
Born January 26, 1952 in Newburgh, he was the son of Donald and Catherine Fleming Betterton. He married the former Betty Jane Dunay on April 27, 1973 at St. John the Evangelist Church, Beacon. Mrs. Betterton preceded him in death August 6, 1999.
Mr. Betterton was a 1970 graduate of Beacon High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1970 to 1972, during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his mother, Catherine Betterton, Poughkeepsie; his sons, David P. Betterton, Jr. and Stephen Betterton, both of Poughkeepsie, and Brian Betterton, Wappingers Falls; his daughter, Tracy Hernandez, Wappingers Falls; his grandchildren, Stephen, Jr., Samantha, David III, and Bailey Shea; his brother, Donald Betterton, New Paltz; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. In addition to his wife and father, he was also predeceased by his brother, Dennis Betterton.
The family statement reads: “Dad was an avid hunter and fisherman. He taught us to respect each other and the outdoors. We’ll never forget our vacations in the Adirondacks, our hunts together up Mount Beacon, and our Christmas tree picking tradition that meant so much to him. Daddy, we love you and we’ll never forget you.”
The family will receive their friends on Thursday, November 5, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 6, at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in St. Joachim’s Cemetery, 303 Washington Avenue, Beacon.
