Shirley M. LaVelle
Shirley M. LaVelle, a lifelong Beacon resident, passed away at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie on Saturday, May 19, 2012. She was 83.
Born in Beacon on December 11, 1928 she was the daughter of Joseph and Henrietta Sayers Devine. On January 27, 1951 Shirley married George S. LaVelle. Mr LaVelle predeceased Shirley in 1998. Shirley was a devoted parishioner of St. Joachim – St. John the Evangelist Church, a member of the St. John’s Women’s Club, a volunteer at St. John’s School and a member of the St. Lawrence Seminary Choir. She was also a member of the Southern Dutchess Country Club and was an avid golfer who loved playing with her friends. She especially loved spending time with her family and their yearly vacations to the Jersey Shore.
Shirley is survived by her children, George M. LaVelle and his wife, Christine of Poughkeepsie, Laurie LaVelle and her husband, Ralph DiCesare of Wappingers Falls and Mary Beth Lunati and her husband, Raymond; her grandchildren, Aaron, Leah, Tara, April and Max; her great grandchildren, Kaitlin, Nathan, Zachary and Cameron; her sisters, Henrietta Bolander, Virginia Bolander and Carol Callahan; her brother, Joseph Devine; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Shirley was predeceased by her sisters, Alice Devine and Joan Butler and her brother, Richard Devine.
The family will receive their friends on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m.at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon.
Interment will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, 301 Washington Avenue, Beacon.
Memorial donations in memory of Shirley may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, New York 12601.
Funeral arrangements are under the supervision of Peter T. and Patrick J. Halvey.
