Adele E. Hird

Retired from Wurlitzer Company

Adele E. Hird, age 91, of North Tonawanda, entered into rest Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Northgate Health Care Facility, where she had resided since 2003. Born in North Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Rachel (nee Woodland) Hird and step-daughter of the late Madge Reid Hird, and was a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda. A 1935 graduate of North Tonawanda High School and a 1937 graduate of Bryant and Stratton Business College, she worked as a secretary to the Phonograph Service Manager at the Wurlitzer Company before retiring after more than 25 years of service. She was a lifetime member of the Payne Avenue Christian Church, now The Church at Shawnee Landing, and served the Church in many capacities. She joined the Tonawanda Business and Professional Women’s Club in 1964, was honored by the club as Woman of the Year in 1970, and was recognized for 40 years of service to the organization in 2004. Adele was a member of the DeGraff Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and worked in the hospital gift shop, and was a member of the Church Women United of the Tonawandas, where she served as Sunshine Chairman.

She is survived by her cousins, Bonnie (David) Wiedemer and their children, Noelle and Karla Wiedemer, Courtney (John) Bevilacqua and Renee (Daniel) Pratt. Also surviving are her cousin, Jack Reid, and many other cousins.

Friends may call from 3-5 PM on Tuesday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held at 5 PM Tuesday; the Rev. Jerry L. McGlone officiating. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at White Chapel Memorial Park, Town of Amherst. If desired, memorials to the Activities Department at Northgate Health Care Facility, 7264 Nash Road, North Tonawanda, NY 14120, are preferred by the family.
