Sister Ann Teresa Neary, SSMN

Educator and Administrator

Sister Ann Teresa Neary, S.S.M.N., an educator and administrator, age 95, died on Monday, March 9, 2009 at Marycrest Convent, in Buffalo, New York, after a long illness. Born Margaret Neary, in Lowell, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Mary (nee Golden) and Patrick Neary. Sister Ann Teresa was educated in Lowell, Massachusetts and later received her teaching degree from Mt. St. Mary Normal School. She entered the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur on January 6, 1932 and made her final profession on August 15, 1940.

During her active years of ministry, Sister Ann Teresa served as an elementary school teacher, a religious education coordinator and an administrator in Kenmore, Buffalo, Lockport, and Binghamton, New York, and in Lowell, Massachusetts. After her retirement Sister Ann Teresa was an active member of the Lockport Senior Center which was located at the site of the original mother house of the Sisters of St. Mary. At this time, she continued her cherished ministry of bringing communion and being a source of love and support to the sick and shut-ins of St. Patrick's (now All Saints) Parish in Lockport.

Sister Ann Teresa was predeceased by her brothers and sisters and is survived by many nieces and nephews and her sisters in the community of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur.

Friends may call at St. Mary Center, 241 Lafayette Avenue, Buffalo, from 3-7 PM on Tuesday, with a wake service at 7 PM, and 3-6:30 PM on Wednesday, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7 PM in the Center Chapel. Interment at the Sisters' Plot in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorial may be made to the Sisters of St. Mary Memorial Fund, 241 Lafayette Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14213.
