Verna Mae Gross

Verna Mae (nee Raffel) Gross, age 81, of Tonawanda, died Thursday, May 7, 2009 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Amherst, she was the daughter of the late William and Edna (nee Higgins) Raffel and had been a resident of Tonawanda for more than 60 years. Mrs. Gross was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and the Tonawanda Senior Citizens. She operated her own reupholstery business, "Verna's Recovery" for many years, and enjoyed reading, country music, and playing the guitar. She was the wife of the late Robert "Poncho" Gross, Sr., who died February 5, 2000, and sister of the late Robert Raffel, William Raffel, Jr., and Betty Buttery.
She is survived by three sons, Robert (Nina) Gross, Jr. of Grand Island, Brian (Susan) Gross of Tonawanda, and James (Melinda) Gross of the Town of Tonawanda; and six grandchildren, Robert III, Matthew, Sarah, Alex, Katie, and William Gross. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4-8 PM today (Friday) and 10-11:30 AM on Saturday at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday at Salem United Church of Christ, Main and Morgan Streets in Tonawanda. Friends invited. Interment at White Chapel Memorial Park, Town of Amherst. If desired, memorials to Salem Church, 114 Morgan Street, Tonawanda, NY 14150, are preferred by the family.
