Sister Mary Patricia Garrity, SSMN
Sister Mary Patricia Garrity, a member of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Marycrest in Buffalo. She was 102. Born Margaret Garrity, in Lowell, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth (nee Hickey) Garrity. Sister Mary Patricia earned her normal school diploma in Lowell, Massachusetts and later received her Bachelor's Degree from Canisius College in 1951, and her Master's Degree from Mt. St. Joseph in 1965. A Sister of St. Mary of Namur for more than 79 years, she taught in Western New York, Sumter, South Carolina, Texas, and Lowell, Massachusetts (her hometown). From all these schools, she had devoted pupils who stayed in touch with their beloved teacher and principal. A group of her "girls" from when she was at Holy Spirit Grade School in 1939 came often to visit her.
In her retirement, her ministry extended to the legions of donors who received her personal thank-you notes in perfect Palmer penmanship.
She is predeceased by five siblings, Father James Garrity, OMI, Father John Garrity, OMI, Sister Mary Gerald Garrity, SSMN, Mary Sullivan, and Katherine Maloof. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, many friends and former pupils, and her sisters in the community of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur.
Friends may call at St. Mary Center, 241 Lafayette Avenue, Buffalo, from 2-6 PM on Monday, where a wake service will be held at 7 PM, and 2-6 PM on Tuesday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 7 PM in the Center Chapel.
