Sister Mary Roark, S.S.M.N.

Music Teacher and Chaplain

Sister Mary Roark, S.S.M.N., age 81, of Buffalo, died Monday, October 19, 2009. Born Mary Margaret Roark in Binghamton, New York, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Margaret (nee Barrett) Roark. She joined the order of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur on August 15, 1946 and took her perpetual vows on August 15, 1955. Sister Mary Roark earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music in 1960, and her Master’s Degree in Music in 1963, both from Catholic University. She served her order as a parochial school teacher, music teacher, organist, and choir director at schools in Kenmore, Lockport and Binghamton, and served as chaplain in many nursing homes, hospitals, and parishes. Sister Mary received her advanced certificate in the National Association of Catholic Chaplains in 1987. She was the sister of the late Sarah Roark.

She is survived by her brother, Rev. John Roark of the Syracuse Diocese; two aunts; several cousins; and her sisters in the congregation of St. Mary of Namur.

Friends may call from 2-6 PM on Wednesday only at the St. Mary Center, 241 Lafayette Avenue in Buffalo, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7 PM on Wednesday; the Rev. John Roark officiating. Friends invited. Interment in the Sisters’ Plot at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to the Sisters of St. Mary Memorial Fund, 241 Lafayette Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14213, are preferred.
