| | | Dean E. Schurke, 61, a resident of Davenport died peacefully on Monday, September 21, 2009 at Genesis Medical Center West Campus. He died following a brief illness and a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family when he passed.
Funeral services to celebrate his life will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, Davenport. The Rev. George White will be the celebrant of the service. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home. Following services cremation rites will be accorded.
Dean Ernest Schurke was born May 4, 1948 in Monticello, Iowa a son of Verdon Keith and Betty Jane (Emmert) Schurke. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War Era, serving from 1968 until 1970.
He was united in marriage to Joyce A. Alger on February 4, 2003 in Davenport.
Dean was a union Millwright for local #2158. He traveled extensively throughout the United States working on Turbine Systems.
He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed living on the river, where he spent many hours looking out at the wildlife and water. He always took care of the birds and fed them all, he especially enjoyed watching the eagles.
Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce, and children and their spouses, David and Kami, Buffalo, Iowa, Derek “Turtle” and Jennifer, Davenport, Brian and Kara, Davenport, Amber and Craig, Moline, and Darrin and Hollie, Davenport; two step-sons, Brad and Brett Linville; 12 grand children; his mother, Betty Schurke, Davenport, a sister, Karen and “Butch” Tague, Davenport, a brother, Greg and “Sue” Schurke, Galesburg, Illinois, and several nieces and nephews.
His father, Verdon, a brother, Brad, and a nephew, Jason, preceded him in death, May they rest in peace.
