| | | Funeral Services and Mass of Christian Burial for William F. Baker, 82, a resident of Davenport will be 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., Davenport, where the family invites you to join them in a rosary service at 4 p.m. to begin the visitation.
Mr. Baker died Monday, October 5, 2009 at Manor Care Locust Street after a year long battle with cancer. William Francis Baker was born September 25, 1927 in Davenport, the son of William L. and Catherine (Daley) Baker. He graduated from Davenport High School and then entered the armed services. He served his country in the Navy during World War II as Seaman First Class.
William was united in marriage to Madge Wright on May 21, 1949 in Davenport. She preceded him in death December 22, 2003.
William was employed as a printer for Warren Packaging Co. for over 25 years and retired in 1993 from Fidlar Printing Co. He was a member of Davenport Moose Club, CASI and Holy Family Catholic Church where he sang in the church choir for funeral masses. He was also quite an avid golfer and very proud of his hole-in-one that he made at Rustic Ridge.
The family would like to thank Manor Care Locust St. and Heartland Hospice for their exceptional care and devotion shown to their father and the Baker family.
Survivors include his daughters, Susan (Steven) Mangels, Davenport and Amy Baker, Eldridge, a son William (Nancy) Baker, Davenport; grandchildren; Kelly, Stephanie, Billy and Katy; great grandchildren, Liam, Carsyn, Michael and expected soon baby McNamara; and a brother Robert M. (Kathy) Baker, Omaha, NE.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Madge, infant children, Becky Ann and Margaret Lee Baker, his parents, and sisters Anne Slattery and Mary Baker and a brother Alphonsus Baker.
Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, Manor Care East Locust St. or to the family.
