| | | Funeral services for Joseph M. Carey, 91, a resident of Rochester, MN, formerly a longtime resident of Davenport, will be 10:00 a.m. Friday October 9, 2009 at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Fonda, IA. Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, Davenport. Additional visitation will take place Thursday evening from 4:00 until 6:00 at Mahaney Funeral Home, 509 King Street, Fonda, IA. Burial will take place in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Fonda. Joe passed away peacefully, Sunday, October 4, 2009 in Minnesota with his daughter by his side.
Joseph Mark Carey was born on November 14, 1917 in Fonda, Iowa, one of nine children born to William and Susan (Marx) Carey. He earned his BA from the University of Iowa in accounting. Joe proudly served our country in the United States Navy. He took part in the invasion on Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Joe embarked on transporting the tanks from the ships to the beach on that fateful day. He also took part in the Rhine River Patrol for 2 years in Berlin. Joe retired from the United States Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander after 30 years of active and reserve service.
After his retirement from the Navy, Joe went to work at the Rock Island Arsenal as an accountant. In his free time, he was a member of the Solo Steppers, a square dancing group out of Davenport. He also was the secretary for the Reserve Officers Association, and a former member of Our Lady of Victory, Davenport.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mayo Hospice Program.
Joe is survived by his children, Bill (Tamara) Carey, Kentucky, Diana (Charles Huskins, M.D.) Carey, Minnesota, and Nicolette Ré, Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren, Estelle, Irina, Maria, and Emily.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers and four sisters.
