Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Alvin F. "Al" Langfeldt, 81, a resident of Davenport, will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 9, 2009 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 26. Visitation for Al will be today (Thursday) from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home with a prayer/rosary service at 6:30 p.m. Al died Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus surrounded by his loving family.
Al was born on February 1, 1928, in Davenport, a son of Frank and Fannie (Carstens) Langfeldt. He proudly served our country in the United State Navy during World War II. Al was united in marriage to Mary Grieder on October 29, 1955, in Davenport. They have shared almost 54 years of marriage and memories together.
Al worked for Meadows Transfer, Jobbers Supply, and Mack Truck, both in Des Moines and Kansas City, MO, Jenkins Truck Lines as a Safety Director, and Mutual Wheel Company as a Service Manager. He was an expert in the field of mechanics. When he retired, he worked for Pheiffer Realty, Mel Foster Company, and Grampp Realty as a realtor, always trying to secure the fairest deal for his clients.
He was a very devoted husband and father. He and Mary celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2005 with a fun-filled reception for family and friends. Al coached Little League baseball and never missed any of his children's activities. In more recent years, he took great pride in his grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their music, dance, and athletic events. Family trips to Wrigley Field to watch his Cubs were a frequent summer highlight. Al was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Davenport Greater Board of Realtors and past member of the Elks Club.

Al is survived by his loving wife, Mary, Davenport; children and their spouses, Sharon (Phil) Menke, Davenport, Dennis (Leta) Langfeldt, Des Moines, IA, and Sheila (Roger) Abbott, Davenport; grandchildren, Andrew "A.J." and Skylar Langfeldt, Benjamin and Brandon Menke, and Bailey and Allie Abbott; sisters, Donna Ray, Vera Quinn, and Carol (Don) Praisner; a brother, Merle (Loraine) Langfeldt; a sister-in-law, Alice Longwell; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Forrest "Bud" Longwell, a sister-in-law, Loyola McCandless, brothers-in-law, Jim McCandless, Ralph Ray, and Dick Curtis.
