Funeral Services and Mass of Christian Burial for Edward J. Hillebrand, 96, a resident of Davenport will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport, with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Post # 26. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. today, October 26, 2009, at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, where the family invites you to join them in a Prayer Service to begin visitation at 4:00 p.m.
Ed died Saturday, October 24, 2009, at Iowa Masonic Home, Bettendorf, after a brief illness. He was born September 1, 1913, in Dyersville, IA. the son of George and Catherine (Bowers) Hillebrand. Ed served his country in the United States Navy as a 3rd Class Petty Officer. He was stationed at the U.S. Sub Base, Kodiak, Alaska.
Ed was united in marriage to Veronica Heaney January 15, 1938 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Davenport. She preceded him in death June 17, 1992.
Ed was employed by the Davenport Police Department for over 25 years. He was a motorcycle traffic officer retiring in 1968. Ed served as one of the guards for President Herbert Hoover’s 80th birthday party. Ed then was an Auto salesman for Louis Dockterman/Kimberly Chrysler retiring in 1979. Ed was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, past trustee and served over 35 years as an usher. He served on the Parish Council and various church committees. Ed was a member of the Iowa State Policeman’s Association Local # 2, Honorary Life Member of Knights of Columbus Loras Council 532 and a charter member of the Halligan McCabe DeVries Pall Bearer Club.
Memorials may be made to St Anthony’s Care and Share.
Survivors include his son Loras Hillebrand of San Diego, CA, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife; brothers, George and Anthony Hillebrand; sisters, Barbara Hillebrand, Hilia Hillebrand, Marie George, Emma Rubley, Clara Lipisus, Margaret Paash and Martha Levetzow, and a sister in law, Eleanor Heaney. May they rest in peace.
