Sister Edith Giacomuzzi, (Sister Mary Frances Cabrini), 82, died Saturday, October 31, 2009, at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Johnston, Iowa. Visitation at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel, Johnston, IA, will be 4-7 p.m.on Tuesday, November 3, with a Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Visitation at the Humility of Mary Center, Magnificat Chapel, 820 W. Central Park Ave. in Davenport will be on Wednesday, November 4, 4–7 p.m. with a Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, at the Center. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m., at St. Anthony Church, 15 Indianola Road, Des Moines. Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines and Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport are assisting with arrangements.
Edith Mary Giacomuzzi was born on February 22, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter of Dominic and Ines (Novello) Giacomuzzi. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary on September 8, 1945, and professed vows on July 28, 1948. Her education included an AA from Ottumwa Heights College, Ottumwa, a BA from Marycrest College, Davenport and an MA from Drake University, Des Moines. Her ministry as a teacher or principal spanned 47 years and included many schools such as St. Alphonsus, Davenport; Our Lady of Lourdes, Bettendorf; St. Austin, Minneapolis, MN; St. Joseph, Fort Madison; St. Patrick, Ottumwa; St. Pius, Urbandale and St. Theresa, St. Anthony, St. Joseph and All Saints, Des Moines. She retired in 1999.
Sister Edith was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two sisters, Lucille Quinn, Des Moines and Esther Giacomuzzi, Albany, NY, a nephew, Anthony Quinn, Irvine, TX, three nieces, Jeannine Leuschen, Omaha, NE, and Christine Struck and Mary Quinn, Des Moines, as well as by the sisters and associates of the Humility of Mary community.
Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Humility.
