SOUTHBURY, CT: Gus Berkes age 102 of Southbury, entered into peaceful rest August 19th in Waterbury, he was the beloved husband of the late Josephine E. (Sherman) Berkes. Born in Chicago, IL on March 9, 1904, son of the late Gustaf and Suzana (Ehman) Berkes. He was a long time resident of Southbury. Mr. Berkes was was in magazine publishing for sixty years having worked for Esquire, Coronet, and McCalls, and Redbook Magazines. He was instrumental in creating such innovations such as inserts, and cents-off coupons in magazines. Gus is most noted for designing and instigating the first usage of a finis indicia (symbol) as a closing marker for articles and stories. All services are private. [GB 1904-2006]
