Obituary for Viola (Crouch) Hodge


Viola (Crouch) Hodge, 96, departed this life on Sept. 3, 2009 at her home in Marmaduke, Arkansas surrounded by her family. She was born on December 6, 1912, and lived her entire life in the Marmaduke area, residing at her current Marmaduke address for the past sixty-seven years. She was a member of the Marmaduke First United Methodist Church. Viola and her husband, Bus Crouch, owned and operated Crouch’s Grocery in Marmaduke for over thirty years. Viola was very civic-minded, serving as Marmaduke City Treasurer for thirty-five years. She was also active with the Paragould Senior Bees, enjoying many travel excursions and experiences.


Preceding her in death were her parents William Thomas Brooks and Laura Wainscott Brooks; seven siblings; her first husband W.L. (Bus) Crouch; her son Sonny Crouch; and her second husband Troy C. Hodge.


Survivors are Kay Vance, her daughter of the home; three grandchildren, Nancy, Kevan, and Tina Vangilder, also of the home; three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Rachel Vangilder, of Marmaduke, and Brooks Vangilder, of the home; several nieces and nephews, including Jane (Joe) Zollner, of Marmaduke; Margaret (Fred) Koch of Alliance, Nebraska; Dr. Fred (Rinda) Clark of Fayetteville, Tennessee; Sharon Stuart of Gaithersburg, Maryland; Thomas (Linda) Swartz of Independence, Missouri; and many friends and relatives who will all greatly miss her warm spirit.


Visitation will be Saturday night from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Irby Funeral Home in Marmaduke. Services will be at 2:00 Sunday afternoon, Sept 6th, at the Irby Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Kim Bridges and Rev. Breck Freeman officiating. Burial will follow at the Harvey’s Chapel Cemetery in Marmaduke.


Pall bearers will be Kevan and Dylan Vangilder, Mike and Mark Graham, Joe Zollner, and Sonny Baledge.


Memorials may be made to Harvey’s Chapel Cemetery Fund. Online guest book may be signed at www.irbyfuneralhome.com.
