| | | Mildred Ursula Elliott, age 97, of Washington, Iowa died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the Halcyon House in Washington following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Monday July 6, 2009 at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Rev. Julie Poulsen officiating. Visitation will begin 11:00 am Sunday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Following services, Mildred’s body will be donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church, Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund or Hospice of Washington County. Mildred was born January 23, 1912 in Harvey, Illinois the daughter of George Christian and Ursula Belle (Best) Freese. She attended school in Chicago and graduated from Calumet High School in January of 1930. During her senior year of high school Mildred was the Chicago area women’s tennis champion. On October 17, 1936 Mildred was united in marriage to William Tiffin Elliott at the Auburn Park United Methodist Church in Chicago, Illinois. She was a homemaker and worked on occasion as a bank teller, receptionist, and secretary. She lived in Chicago until 1949, when she moved to Des Moines, Iowa. In 1979 she moved to Washington where she was a resident at Halcyon House.
Mildred was a life long member of the United Methodist Church, in Des Moines at the Grace United Methodist Church and most recently at the United Methodist Church in Washington. She participated in the United Methodist Women and volunteered in many areas.
Mildred is survived by her daughter Linda Anne Sturdevant of Washington, Iowa; granddaughter Stacy Anne Nielsen and husband David of Washington, Iowa; grandson Matthew Elliott Sturdevant and wife Kara of Hoschton, Georgia; and four grandchildren, Bryce Nielsen of Phoenix, Arizona, Rachael Nielsen and Amanda Nielsen of Washington, Iowa and Nicholas Sturdevant of Hoschton, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1976, two sisters and one brother.
