Dora Mae Chalupa Cole, age 93, of Washington, Iowa formerly of Pleasant Plain, died Saturday, July 4th at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton following a brief illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Tuesday July 7, 2009 at the
Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Rev. Sallie Graves officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Monday evening. Interment will take place at the Friends Cemetery in Pleasant Plain, Iowa. Memorials have been established to the Hospice unit of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, Iowa. Dora was born March 5, 1916 in Hedrick, Iowa the daughter of Guy and Ethel Anderson. She graduated from Pleasant Plain High School. She was united in marriage to Leroy Chalupa in March of 1935. They had three children; Shirley, Dennis, and Beverly.

Dora was a homemaker until Leroy’s death in 1965. Soon after she became a nurse’s aide in the maternity ward at the Jefferson County Hospital. Dora loved her work and was well respected.

She married Floyd Cole of Fairfield in March of 1974. He preceded her in death in 1979. Dora enjoyed her active lifestyle including sewing, quilting, making porcelain dolls and dressing them in period costumes. She was a wonderful cook and her friends and family will greatly miss her dutch apple pies.

Dora is survived by daughter Shirley Halverson and husband Keith of Marion, Iowa; son Dennis Chalupa and wife Bobbi of Newton, Iowa; granddaughters Peg Broadie and husband Dick of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Michelle Lynch and husband Scott of South Carolina; grandsons Paul Watson and wife Mary of Lone Tree, Iowa; Scott Halverson of Waukee, Iowa and Chad Chalupa and wife Somer of North Carolina. She is also survived by ten great grandchildren and one sister Charline Deutschman of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Leroy in 1965 and Floyd in1974, and her daughter, Beverly in 1968.
